The first step in any home improvement project is to set a budget. Think about how you will pay for your bathroom remodel so that you will know how much money you have available to spend. Are you going to use savings, or possibly borrowing against the equity in your home, or will you be doing a pay as you go renovation completing each phase of the remodel as money is available? These are all good options. Just be sure that you will have enough money available to do a good job once you start. You should have money in your budget for materials, labor, permits, inspections, debris removal and consultations. You also need to have a cushion in your budget for unexpected expenses such as replacing wiring or plumbing or repairing structural issues such as floors that are not level. Be prepared by having more money in your budget than you think you will need.

Once you have a budget set. Do your homework and find out what kinds of permits you will need for your bathroom remodel. Obtaining permits can be a time consuming process, so don’t wait until you are ready to work before you try to get authorization. You may also find out that there are restrictions that limit the kind of work you can have done in your remodel. Hiring a knowledgeable contractor or checking with a consultant may help you through this process.

Draw up plans and measure carefully before purchasing new fixtures. Buying expensive fixtures such as tubs, showers and toilets only to find out that they don’t fit in your bathroom or you can’t get them through your front door is not only frustrating, it can destroy your budget. Changing your bathroom layout can also create problems due to where plumbing and wiring is located, so be sure to get expert advice.

Decide what you can do yourself and what work needs to be contracted out. If you are a do-it-yourself enthusiast, you may want to do most of the work on your own. Even if you do the work yourself, you can hire a consultant or design expert to help you make your plans. On the other hand, if you have an ample budget, it may be worth it to hire contractors for the entire job. Just be sure that you check with them frequently and make sure they are following your requests and doing a good job. Going through any kind of renovation can be a time-consuming hassle, but the end result will be worth it.
