Planning a workspace in your home for completing writing tasks, paying bills, studying or working from home is an excellent idea. A study room design should include four main components, an adequate size work-surface, a storage area for files office supplies and books, ample lighting and sufficient power outlets for all of your electronics and office machines. Whether you are using a small space in another room such as the kitchen, living room or bedroom or you are dedicating an entire room for your study, you can design a workstation that provides both comfort and visual appeal.1. A study room design needs to include a work surface that is a comfortable height for the person who will be using it the most. Homework areas for young children will require lower surfaces than desks for adults. There needs to be an opening below the work-surface so that a person can comfortably pull their chair close enough for their arms to rest on the desktop. Work surfaces can be made of wood, glass, marble or just about any other smooth solid material that is used for counter tops.
2. If you are using a desk, choose one that has at least one drawer large enough to hold files, other drawers can be used to store office supplies. Another option is to install storage cabinets and book shelves below a counter top, leaving an opening for a person to sit. You can place a solid work surface across two filing cabinets, or saw-horses to create a desk, too. The possibilities are endless. Whichever you choose, remember to include storage to keep your study area organized, even if it is just decorative baskets with labels. Don’t forget the space above your desk. You can add bookshelves or cabinets to house printers and other peripheral devices, books, reams of paper etc. Shelves also provide an opportunity to display decorative items such as framed pictures and artwork. Adding a bulletin board and a dry-erase board will also improve your area’s usefulness while keeping things organized.
3. If you are having your study area custom-built, it would be wise to have under-cabinet lighting installed on shelves and cabinets over the desk area. At the very least, a study room design should include a desk-lamp that is easily adjustable. There are many styles available with flexible stands and shades that tilt so that you can put the right amount of light where you need it. While it is important to have extra light available at your work-station, it is also important that the entire study area be well-lit to prevent eye fatigue when you are working.
4. Even if you have computers and electronics that work on battery power, your study should have access to power outlets so that you can keep your equipment fully charged and functioning. It is very frustrating to be interrupted in the middle of a task by the need to recharge your batteries or worse, lose work because your device shuts-off. You can avoid these problems by keeping your devices plugged in while you are in your study. You should have enough outlets to run desk-lamps, computers, cell-phone chargers, printers and even an electric pencil sharpener. To prevent tripping a circuit breaker, you should have more than one outlet available. Also, remember to use surge protectors to reduce the possibility of damaging your equipment in case of a power surge. Try to coral all of your wires neatly behind your desk.
